First or third?

I was over at Karin Tabke’s blog reading the entries in the first line contest again. The lines are great. And I’m starting to get into some of the stories. Round 7 is up now. I’ll have to keep tabs on the writers so I know when they sell. But I found myself liking some of the ones in first person. I don’t like first person. Never have. I like knowing what everyone is thinking (if the writer puts scenes in everyone’s P.O.V.). I did like Dean Koontz’s Twilight Eyes even though it was in first person. That book was a little different though. His main character could basically read the minds of others. So even though it was first person I still knew what the other characters were thinking.

I went to Chapters Sunday to pick up the many recommendations my FF&P chapter gave me for vampire novels. When buying books normally I read the back blurb. Check out the cover. Read the first sentence. Flip through to see if it’s third person and then decide if I’m going to buy it. Not so this time. I had my list in hand and just started grabbing books off the shelf. Good thing too because there was at least one I wouldn’t have bought if I used my usual method. The back cover blurb was good. It had an awesome first line. But the book is in first person. And I can’t wait to read it.

Anybody else have a preference? First person or third person?

Until next time…

Cindy

I love first person. I write in it a lot. :)

Hi, Tori! I’ve never tried writing in first person - maybe I should. I am reading it a little more though.
