My new movie watching mission

I want to be a screenwriter. I love movies. I love writing. I’ll still write books but there’s no rule that says I can’t do both. Oh sure, I’ve heard you should pick one or the other. Advice abounds that if you want to do both you should do one first and then the other. I’ve never been one to listen to what other people say once I’ve made up my mind.

I was reading an article about the forgotten steps to writing movies a few weeks ago. Now, I always knew you should watch movies if you want to write them. After all the first piece of advice I ever received when I decided I wanted to write books was read, read, read. So it came as no surprise that I should watch movies. And lots of them. What did surprise me was how many I need to watch. If I’m serious about wanting to write movies I need to watch a MINIMUM of 100 movies a year. That’s a lot of movies. So far this year I’m a little behind. I’ve only seen thirty-one so far. But I intend to complete my mission. How I’m going to do that, read twenty books, give workshops, write and spend time with family and friends I have no idea. Somehow, I’ll manage it.

I’m off to work. Maybe when I get home I’ll watch a movie.

Until next time.
