Do you remember the drive-in?

I loved the drive-in when I was little. Loved being able to wear my PJs. Sitting in lawn chairs beside the car. Playing in the playground before the movie started and during intermission. I even loved the dancing popcorn. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the drive-in. Ontario has very few of them left these days. And the ones they do have are sort of a hike to get to. But…a group of friends and I are going to the drive-in tomorrow. I can’t wait.

For one of my friends it will be his first time ever going to the drive-in! Can you believe that? A thirty-something guy who has never experienced the drive-in. I hope I haven’t hyped it up too much for him. I wouldn’t want him to be disappointed. And none of the usual shenanigans will be going on because let’s face it, my friends and I are too old for that. But we will enjoy two movies and have the freedom of not being shushed if any of us talk during the movie. Well, I’ll enjoy two movies. Whether or not the rest of them will be able to stay up that late is anyone’s guess.

We’re going to The 5 Drive-In. Our choices for tomorrow are:

Screen 1

Angels and Demons
The Taking of Pelham 123

Screen 2

Terminator Salvation
The Hangover

Screen 3

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Land of the Lost

If anyone can guess what screen I’ll be at I’ll put your name in a hat to draw for my complete Is That Hollywood Calling? Workshop complete with extras.

I’m off to work.

Until next time…

  1. Edie Says:

Screen 1! I have fond memories of drive-ins, too. One with a date still makes me laugh. He couldn’t find the car, and my name was called over the speaker to come get him at the recession stand. Of course, they didn’t say his name, but he must have been embarrassed.

  2. Anna Louise Lucia Says:

I’m going for screen 2! Mostly because I’m desperate to see Terminator.

We don’t have drive-ins over here, so I’ve never been to one, either! :hissyfit:

  3. Margaret A. Golla Says:

Drive-ins are disappearing in OK, too. I’ve only been to one once–I had a hard time staying awake! As an early riser, you usually don’t stay up late! Okay, I’m going to round out the voting with Screen #3!

  4. Tori Lennox Says:

I used to love going to the drive-in when I was kid. Haven’t been to one since, um about 1981 or ’82. Saw Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars. :) Good times.

We don’t have them around here anymore, though they still have at least a few out in Arizona.

I’d be choosing screen #3, too!

  5. Donna Caubarreaux Says:

I remember seeing a drive-in movie in 1962 where a woman pranced around with no top. The main character took off her blouse and I never knew that a woman’s breasts could be ugly…we could hear people in other cars yelling, “Put it back on.” What a different era.

At least today, you can pack an ice chest and bring cold drinks.

I’d see Hangover, it’s sophomoric, but if you want to sell a screenplay, and can think of something like this, it should sell. From what I read, there are no ‘big wage’ actors in it, so it’s a true money-maker. Could well be a career maker for an actor.

  6. Karin Tabke Says:

Cindy I love the drive in! We used to pile our kids into the truck and head on out for the night. it was always fun.

  7. Therese Walsh Says:

I remember the drive-in days. Sigh. Wish they were still around my area so that I could take my kiddos. :-)

  8. Kathleen Irene Paterka Says:

Cindy, I remember drive-ins! In Northern Michigan, they were only open about 3 months out of the year (summer, obviously!) Drive-ins bring back memories of hot summer nights, of mosquitoes buzzing your ears in the car, and the windshield fogging up when you cracked the windows mostly shut to try and keep out the mosquitoes …

The drive-in is long gone; now part of a 5-star property and top-rated golf course … but thanks for the memories!

    -Kathleen

  9. Cindy Says:

Edie, that’s too funny. He must have been embarrassed.

Anna, that would explain why he’s never been to one and neither has his mother. They both came to Canada from England. Whenever you’re on this side of the pond you should check one out.

Margaret, LOL. I’m a night person. I’d be able to stay up for three movies.

Tori, that’s a long time. Great movies to see at the drive-in though.

Donna, that’s very funny. I can just imagine everyone yelling that.

Karin, that’s what I remember. Going with my parents and their friends who had kids my age and my sister’s age. It was a lot of fun.

Therese, they’re gone from where you are too? It’s too bad your kids won’t be able to experience the drive-in.

Kathleen, I think that’s their purpose. To bring back memories. The one we’re going to opened in March. Don’t know how long it’s open until.

  10. Cindy Says:

Thanks for the comments everyone! I’ll be taking guesses until Saturday at midnight. I’ll announce the screen and the winner Sunday morning.

  11. Mary Marvella Says:

Oh, yes! My family went to drive-in, the only we we could see movies. No television.
We’d go in daddy’s 1950 Ford. Sometimes there would be more than on cartoon before the main feature.

The playground equipment was cool but the mosquitoes were not.

And then there was the guy in college who took me to see Janet Leigh get stabbed in a shower. He expected me to cling to him and make out. NOT!

    Loved double feature nights.

  12. Mary Marvella Says:

    Angels and Demons, screen one.

  13. Barbara White Daille Says:

Cindy – I rememeber drive-ins! I don’t think we ever went to one in my hometown, but my older cousin used to take us to the drive-in when we visited them. It’s a good memory from a lot of my summer vacations!

Oh, and I vote for screen #2.

    Best,
    Barbara

  14. Cindy Says:

Mary, yeah the bugs were never fun. We all forgot to bring bug spray last night but it was cool enough that the bugs stayed away.

Barbara, drive-ins were one of the many things I loved about summer when I was younger. I’m glad we’re going to be doing it more.
