District 9

What with the camping, writing meetings, vacation, contest judging, and a new significant other, I haven’t had a lot of time to actually go to the movies lately. I’m way behind on my movie quota for the year. But, I did get to the movies last week and saw District 9. Now, I like Peter Jackson, though I’ll admit I haven’t seen everything he’s done. And he didn’t direct this movie. He was the executive producer. Still, with his name attached how could you go wrong, right? RIGHT!

Ha, you thought I was going to say wrong. The only real complaint I have is the shaky camera work. You all know how I LOVE that. But unlike most other movies I’ve seen with the shaky camera style this actually added to the movie. Leant it some realism. The documentary style of the movie also added to the realism.

It is a movie about racism. And it still had me thinking about it days later. Wondering about things. Analyzing other parts. There were some definite gross moments. And there were moments that really made you think. I thought it was a well told story. The set ups were there. Some of the payoffs were predictable. It was fast paced. I did like the ending. And of course it’s been left open for a sequel or three.

Would I say it was the best science fiction movie I ever saw? Probably not. But it is up there. It was a fantastic movie.

I’ll be getting to another movie this week but I’ll still be behind. I’ll have a lot of catching up to do later. For now I’m off to work.

Until next time…
