Terra Nova plot holes

Don’t get me wrong. I do like Terra Nova but I think it can do better. I’m talking about the most recent episode from Monday, October 17. To talk about all the plot holes I’d have to watch all the episodes over again but I have a lot of other things to watch and pages to write.

So, where to begin? Let’s talk about how they knew the little girl was even out there. The thermal imaging scan. It can pick up a little girl but not a militia?

Okay, fine, they found the girl. She gave a sob story about being lost. They took her in. The leader of the Sixers arrived with a team of men to get the girl back. How lame was Commander Nathaniel Taylor’s threat? I hope the dialogue gets better. Fast forward to the girl saying she wants to stay and the Sixers leaving. Why didn’t anyone follow them? There would have been tracks. At least there should have been tracks.

The little girl said they moved around a lot but they’re living in trees and looked pretty settled to me. Of course she could have been lying. But let’s talk about the trees. No one noticed trees that look different? They would have looked different if they had homes built into them. And that’s another thing. Wouldn’t some of the leaves be dying in places?

The top two contenders for the spy are still (in my opinion) the scientist (the wife’s ex) and the guy courting Maddy. Please, writers, don’t make it either of those two. They’re so obvious.

With such potential it’s disappointing the writers haven’t done more. I know a lot of sci fi shows have plots that are similar. It would be nice though if the writers gave us some twists we’re not expecting. And some dialogue I can’t recite before the characters even speak it. I’d love to see some fresh writing in future episodes.

What do you think of the show? Do you love it? Hate it?

I’m testing a new Twitter app with this blog post so I hope it shows up!

Until next time…

Halloween

There is so much out there about Halloween. Some believe it is linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which when translated roughly means summer’s end. It was believed that the veil between this world and the Otherworld became thin at this time of year, allowing spirits to pass through into this world. To ward off any harmful spirits you would wear costumes and masks.

Dressing up and going begging door to door dates back to the middle ages. Back then poor people went door to door looking for food. In return they would pray for the dead. This of course evolved to children dressing up and trick or treating for candy. In some customs the children actually perform tricks (sing a song or tell a ghost story) to earn their treats. Nowadays children say the phrase – trick or treat – and we just hand over candy. I think it would be fun to ask for a trick first before we handed over the treat.

There are tons of places to find out more on Halloween. This Wikipedia article on Halloween is really good. And of course you must check out Halloween.com.

I’m off to think about my NaNoWriMo story now.

Ghosts and haunted houses of Guelph

With Halloween right around the corner I thought I would do a post about the ghosts and hauntings in Guelph. Every city has them. Most of the time you only hear about them around Halloween. That’s when most of the ghost walks happen.

I found a list of top five haunted places in Guelph that I would like to check out one of these days. One of them is te Woodlawn Cemetery. I actually like cemeteries. I get lots of ideas there. And I love how spooky they can be at night. Your imagine just goes wild. The parking lot on Baker Street is also haunted. Who would have thought a parking lot could be haunted? But apparently it was once a cemetery.

I also found a couple of stories about the jail in Guelph being haunted. I would love to go on that tour. You can read about it here and here.

For a list of the five most haunted places in Guelph check out Our Top Five Haunted Areas of Guelph.

Every year around Halloween check out the Haunted House of Horrors.

I’m off to get something done.

Until next time…

Haunted Nova Scotia

I picked up a book today called Ghosts of Nova Scotia 10th Anniversary Edition. Looking through the table of contents made me realise Nova Scotia has A LOT of ghosts. I always suspected this of course. And I’d seen the books before when I would visit Cape Breton. There was always a ghost story book about the island or the Maritimes in general. This is the first time I actually bought one.

Nova Scotians do love their ghost stories. And this book has quite a few to satisfy. I of course skipped to the Cape Breton section. But ghosts seem to abound all over the province. I haven’t started reading it yet but I can’t wait to dive in after I’ve read a few other books on my to be read pile. The first two I flipped to involved ghosts and the sea. Ships were wrecking all over the place years and years ago. I was not surprised to learn there is a ghost in Louisbourg. You can just feel the history there. I haven’t seen or felt the ghost there but it’s been a while since I visited. The ghost in the Sydney Coal Mines didn’t surprise me either. How could anyone be surprised to learn there’s a ghost on Murder Island? That name just screams ghost.

One of these years I’d like to go on a ghost tour while I’m in Nova Scotia. Maybe next year. It will depend on when the boyfriend and I visit.

Now I’m off to work on a short story.

Until next time…

The Broken Mirror

I’ve been trying to work on a story I want to submit to an anthology. Mirrors play a big part in it so that had me researching mirror superstitions. Everyone knows the superstition that you get seven years back luck if you break a mirror. But do you know why? The Romans believed that it took seven years for life to renew. To get rid of the bad luck you bury the pieces of the broken mirror.

Do you know other mirror myths and superstitions? There are quite a few of them. For instance all mirrors must be covered in a house where someone died. This is to prevent the soul from getting trapped in the mirror. If a mirror falls off a wall it means someone is going to die. It’s bad luck to see your reflection by candlelight. Of course there’s the old vampires don’t cast a reflection because they have no souls. Apparently it’s also bad luck to receive a mirror as a present.

The superstitions surrounding mirrors could give me ideas for a while.

And milestone time! This is my 200th post!

Off to bed.

Until next time…

Another Planet

I’ve been fascinated by space and the planets since I was a little girl. I used to stretch out on the picnic table at night and stare up into the sky. I used to imagine a girl who lived on one of those bright spots in the sky staring into the cosmos thinking the same things I did. As a little girl the thought of alien life fascinated me. As I got older of course I realised it was that if there was intelligent life out there it highly unlikely that they would come to earth in my lifetime.

I never stopped believing that it was possible there was alien life out there. With the size of the universe, the odds are Earth is not the only planet capable of supporting life. That’s why I was so excited when the boyfriend posted this link about the 1st habitable distant planet found.

Astronomers found a planet orbiting a red dwarf that they think is habitable. I read the article and found the whole thing fascinating. I hope they find many, many more. It makes me want to delve into writing a science fiction novel. I’ve never written one before. But the article started ideas going through my head.

I’m off to read more science articles. Until next time…
