Progress or not

Or not much progress. Well, I’m actually making progress on my movie watching goal. I’ve seen ten movies so far this year. I haven’t been doing the Wii Fit as much as I wanted. Actually, I think it’s been twice. I’m not worried though because the year is still young. I’ve lost seven pounds since I started my diet. Okay, so it was all in the first week. The second week I didn’t lose anything. But that will change.

I’m determined to get through my two books a month. I’m about a quarter through one right now. I have to start reading at night while I watch TV if I want to accomplish that goal.

I will be resuming my regluar blog postings too. This one is a day late. Tomorrow’s should be one time. Fingers crossed. It’s busy at work and I’ve been bringing work home with me.

Speaking of…I have to log into work to get something done before I go to bed.

Until next time…

Cindy

Happy New Year!

I’m late as usual with my New Year goals but here they are:

Writing goals

1. Write 1000 words a day every day

2. Read 24 books

3. Watch 100 movies

4. Read ten scripts

5. Critique more

6. Take at least 2 workshops

7. Give screenwriting workshops (three already booked)

8. Submit 10 short stories and one novel

9. Continue to grow the in person writing groups

10. Participate more in all the loops I belong to

Personal

1. Save at least $100.00 a month

2. Start the Wii Fit and stick with it

3. Lose 50 lbs (to start)

4. Spend time with family and friends

5. Work out a work-writing-life balance

I’ve already seen three movies so I’m on track for that goal so far. I managed it last year so I’m not worried about doing it this year. I’m behind on my writing already because I’ve been doing stuff around the house that really needed to be done. And I’m not finished yet. I will get on track with everything though. I’m hoping this will be a great writing year.

Until next time…

2010 Goals Recap

Okay, I didn’t do everything on my list but I did do a heck of a lot more writing this year than I did in 2009. So here’s how my goals for this year break down:

Read two books a month – nope. I read seven books for the whole year. Must work on that.

Watch 100 movies – this will be a yes. As of today I have four movies to go and three days left in the year.

Write 100 words every day – mostly. I did manage to do 100 words a day for 100 days twice. I had a break in between. I just finished my round two and will start round 3 again today I hope.

Critique more – yep, did that. I have three critique partners now.

Take at least two workshops – took way more than that. I think I was already at two in January. And I just took two this month. Plus there were others.

Give screenwriting workshops – did that too.

On the personal goal side I pretty much only spent time with friends and family. I did not start the Wii Fit again. I didn’t really save a whole lot of money.

On top of the stuff on my list I also won NaNoWriMo, wrote seven short stories and submitted two of them.

I’ll be back New Year’s Day with new goals!

Until next time…

Time Management and your Goals

I have guest blogger Dale Mayer here today to talk about time management. I definitely need tips on that! She’s given some great tips here.

Thanks to Cindy for inviting me to her blog today. We’ve both been doing Nano this month and it’s amazing the kind of questions that we both get asked. As a prolific writer, who also works full time and is a single mother of four, the most common question for me is – How? How do you manage to get it all done?

The answer is really simple – but getting to the point of being able to say it isn’t. The answer is – I get it done because I have to.

Simple huh? The thing is coming to understand that life is all about priorities and you have to set your life into an order. Sure that order will shift from time to time, but the basis of your everyday life is going to be defined by the things you hold dear. Up at the top, behind my kids (lol) is my writing. My goal is to write fiction full time. In order to do that I have to produce saleable works now. That’s hard when I have a full life so I HAVE to fit it in. That’s not an option if in a couple of years I expect to be living my dream. So how do I fit it in, you ask?

Over time, I have found we waste more time than we utilize effectively. So the first trick is to find the areas where time slips by you. The obvious culprits are email, surfing on the Internet. As my life revolves around writing I will mention other areas where I have found time to write more – you can utilize these time slots for anything!

    • Texting and time spent on phone calls.

    • Coffee time when you do nothing but could be putting down notes for your next scenes.

    • Lunchtime at work. Did you know how easy it is to write five hundred words in twenty minutes? If you don’t, you should check out Write or Die by Dr. Wicked. This software can be used online or there is a desktop version to download.

    • Many people sit down after dinner and turn on the television. Instead of turning it on right away, use it as a reward after writing 1,000 words.

    • Sneak bits of time away. If you have appointments take a notebook with you.

    • If you have a busy family, take a time out for thirty minutes in your room. Let everyone know this is your time and expect to have the same respect for your needs as you do for theirs.

    • Get up a little early and have a half hour to yourself and your goals in the morning.

    • Another trick is to take that half hour to yourself in the evening.

I taught myself to write in front of the television while it was blaring, to write while the kids are doing homework beside me and to write in snippets. A fifteen minute break is 500 words. I can get three or four of those in throughout a day.

The biggest trick to getting more accomplished in a day is to be HONEST about what you really want to do. In the case of writing – do you want to write a book – or do you want to be of those people who HAVE written a book?

Getting from one point to the next is all about time management.

    1. Make a list of where you waste time.

    2. Then make a list of new opportunities of when you might recoup a few minutes of time.

    3. Then be deadly honest here – make a list of what you want to accomplish. And be realistic about this list.

    4. Then make a list of the baby steps you can do THAT day to start accomplishing these goals.

I find that by having a visual list to mark off each accomplishment, there is a real sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. I sleep well and I get up the next day wanting to get back at it. We’re all different. Finding out what works for you is what’s important.

How do you get things done in your day? Is it a mad scramble just before bedtime? Do you work better under pressure, or do you like to have spare time between you and deadlines? Are you happy with your system or are you always feeling pressure because you’re ‘behind’?

Goals check

Every year I make goals. Writing goals and personal goals. I think everyone needs goals. In books the characters’ goals combined with their motivation are what move the stories forward. If only it could be so easy in real life. But goals are needed to keep you on target. I’m lucky because I belong to a great community of writers dedicated to achieving their goals. Being in WritingGIAM is the best thing that could have happened to my writing. Being accountable every week for what I accomplished has me almost always pushing forward. Being able to check off things from that goals list feels really good at the end of the day. The support, encouragement, tough love, concern, friendship on that loop keeps me going.

It’s mid year so I thought I would look back at the goals I had in January and see how I was doing. I posted a short version on the blog but a longer version for my goals loop. The writing goals I posted there were:

Writing goals

1. Write 100 words a day every day
2. Read 24 books
3. Watch 100 movies
4. Read ten scripts
5. Critique more
6. Take at least 2 workshops (done – taking 2 in January)
7. Give screenwriting workshops (Five already booked)
8. Submit something
9. Continue to grow the in person writing groups
10. Participate more in all the loops I belong to

I did well with the 100 words a day until two weeks ago when workshops took most of time but I’m back on that wagon. And it should have been write at least 100 words a day. I usually go over that when I’m on a roll. I’m behind with the book reading. So far I’ve read five books. The goal is still doable but I have to up the number of books I read a month. I’m halfway through the 100 movies. Well, almost. I’ve watched 49 so far. The script reading hasn’t happened at all. Still have all 10 of those to do. I have been critiquing more when needed and owe one of my CPs a critique that I have to get done this week. I went way over the two workshops I wanted to take. I think I’ve taken five already. Big check mark on the giving workshops goal too and I still have two more to give. I did submit a first chapter to an agent and I will be submitting short stories in the near future. Once I polish them. I’m happy to say my in person writing group is doing very well. Check it out here. And I have been participating more in most of my loops.

I guess I’m not doing too badly so far. Still lots to accomplish before the end of the year. But there’s still six months to get it done.

On the personal front I have been spending time with family. Since moving in with my boyfriend I don’t see them as much as I used to but I do visit once a week. Sometimes twice if we’re going over for dinner. I’ve been saving a little. Doing the WiiFit rarely. I need to get back on that and the points. I did get a membership at a hotel so I can use the pool.

So that’s it. Goals are coming along and I hope to have check marks for all of them by December 31. Do you have goals? How are yours coming along?

I’m off to work.

Until next time…

Cindy
